A'diggin for flower pots

This past Sunday was my first time back in the field since last semester. I went with my adviser and classmates to the Woodlands. The Woodlands is a National Historic Landmark that includes a mansion (c. 1787) and its carriage house and stable (c. 1792). It is currently surrounded by a cemetery. There was a greenhouse on the property until the middle of the 19th century. A PhD student at another university is doing her dissertation where the greenhouse is believed to have been located, but we excavated two test units down the hill. The remains of the greenhouse are believed to have been carried down the hill from its destruction and water run-off. We found TONS of pieces of terracotta plant pots, some glass and pottery sherds, pieces of brick, and some random metal objects. Today I helped one of the other graduate students clean off the objects and re-bag them. Next Wednesday, a few of us are going to go back to finish digging the units. Although it was really interesting, I don't think garden archaeology is for me. It did feel great to be back out in the field. Nothing is better than playing in the dirt.

Because I have an obsession with my pets

Yeah so I've taken about 100 pictures of Delilah since I got her in February. I'm uploading a few since I need to share her cuteness with the world. And by world I mean the few people who follow this blog. I have nothing exciting to report until Sunday when I go dig at Elfreth's Alley in Philly. Until then, look at the pig!

Delilah

Oh yeah, so here is a video of my ridiculous new pet. She is adorable. And a sassy bitch.

So Noah came with his boat and animals while my apartment was flooding...

Wow, it's been months since I posted anything on here. I am trying to make it a priority to post more often, although my life is hardly exciting. Today was a uniquely ridiculous day, however.

So I was taking a shower around 11am today when I heard the fire alarm go off. I put on my robe and I looked outside. No one was exiting the building. I look into the hallway and no one was around. I did not see or smell smoke. No sirens could be heard. I figured it was a false alarm or a test so I went back in the shower. A few minutes later I get out and there is a knock-a-knock-knock at my door. I answer it and it was a Temple officer and Philly officer. They told me that there was a leak and it seemed like it was coming from my apartment. I looked down the staircase (I'm on the second floor) and the foyer is FLOODED and it looks like the water is coming from where my kitchen is located. They left and I got dressed. Shortly thereafter, a maintenance worker came by and she checked underneath my sink and where my heat comes from and everything looked okay. She leaves. Then another maintenance worker comes and he turns on the shower. The woman yells up to him that the leak isn't worse. He uses the bathroom sink. Nothing. He turns on the kitchen sink. She yells, "Oh my god the water! Turn it off! Turn it OFF!!" Okay, so my sink may have caused the pipe to burst. Oh and in the midst of this, I trew my guinea pig, Delilah, in the closet since *technically* grad housing does not allow pets. Then the woman comes back and she's like, "Did you just turn on the water?" and I was like "Um no the pipe burst." The girl above me, not knowing what was going on, flushed the toilet and it made the pipe explode with water again. Apparently, the problem originated where some pipes connected and it was not just my apartment that caused the problem. Thank goodness. I couldn't stand it anymore so I went to Starbucks and did some work until I had to catch the subway and meet my advisor in South Philly to explore sold 18th century houses. When I got back a few hours later, everything looked okay except for a huge hole in the ceiling. Buttttttt apparently the water in the building was shut off. So I have no running water. I had to go to my RAs apartment to fill up my Brita. And I just had to pee in a plastic container. This sucks.

Oh yeah. And Delilah was in the closet all afternoon. In the dark. Poor pig.

Long day.

And gross day.
